Welcome to the website for the Global Iron Summit which took place on 7 & 8 November 2008 in Athens, Greece. Approximately 500 physicians from Canada, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and Asia participated in this highly interactive scientific meeting.
The meeting, chaired by Professors Maria Domenica Cappellini and Chaim Hershko, was held to provide key information on iron toxicity in patients with transfusional iron overload and on the management of these patients using iron chelation therapy.
The meeting comprised plenary presentations, breakout sessions, and interactive workshops. The plenary presentations addressed the impact of iron toxicity from the molecular to the organ level, the pathophysiology and evaluation of iron overload across various disease states, and the relationship between iron chelation therapy and haemopoietic activity. The breakout sessions were divided into 2 tracks: Track 1 comprised 6 interactive case-based presentations on thalassaemia and sickle cell disease; Track 2, also with 6 interactive case-based presentations, included cases on myelodysplastic syndromes, haemopoietic stem cell transplantation, and rare anaemias. The 5 workshops covered various topics related to iron toxicity. The meeting concluded with a state-of-the-art presentation on the potential role of iron chelation therapy beyond transfusional iron overload.
On this site, you will find a list of the plenary presentations and breakout sessions, slides and films of these presentations, biographies of the respective faculty members, and abstracts of the plenary presentations.
The meeting was sponsored by an unrestricted educational grant from Novartis Oncology and organized by Excerpta Medica.
